The festival is one month long, starting from the new moon of the fourth month, and ending with the full moon of the next month. In Gregorian calendar it usually falls on May – June. Saga Dawa (Sanskrit Vaiśākha) is the fourth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar and is considered the most important Buddhist holiday period of the year. The month’s name derives from the clan of Śākya, and the Buddha’s epithet, Śākyamuni, translates as “the sage of the Śākyas”. The Saga Dawa festival is one of the most important festivals for the people of Sikkim celebrated with much enthusiasm in the capital city Gangtok. The Mahayana Buddhist tradition recognizes the full moon day of the fourth month of the Buddhist calendar as the anniversary of Buddha's birth, his enlightenment, and his Nirvana. Saga means “the fourth” and Dawa refers to “month” in Tibetan.

About Saga Dawa. Saga Dawa is the most holy month of the year for Tibetan Buddhists. It usually starts in May or June. During this very special time, meritorious action is multiplied 100,000 times, so positive actions are especially powerful. Saga Dawa is the most important festival in Tibet and for this reason we all tibetans are willing to visit Mt. Kailash and complete its kora during this time.
